As the first step of EDGE Evolution, Nokia Seimens Networks today launched their Dual Carrier EDGE software. The software will double the speed of data connections, up to 592 Mbps, on existing EDGE-capable GSM networks. This amounts to a much faster mobile internet experience that will allow for smooth streaming video, faster uploads, etc.

The Dual Carrier EDGE solution will be available as a software upgrade starting in Q3 2008. Nokia Seimens Networks is already looking ahead to the next step in EDGE Evolution. The telecom giant plans to introduce EGPRS 2 to its network, which will increase download speeds up to 1.2 Mbps and upload speeds up to 473 Kbps. According to Nokia Seimens Networks Head of Radio Access Business Unit, Ari Lehtoranta, "By 2015, [Nokia expects] to live in a broadband-IP world with five billion people ‘always on’ and therefore Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to protecting customer investments and continue to implement leading EDGE technology. Dual Carrier software upgrade is an easy and extremely cost efficient step to bring broadband user experience to GSM/EDGE networks.”

Nokia Siemens Networks GSM/EDGE BSS is operational in 260 networks in 117 countries offering services to more than 1.5B subscribers. As the rapid increase in demand for high speed data connections continues, the Dual Carrier solution should help 3G/HSPA network operators provide faster service to their customers and offer service continuity for their 3G services.
