AT&T yesterday announced that it boosted its 3G network speed. The network's typical downlink speed was increased by over 20 percent while the uplink speed was increased by 50 percent. The increase in speed was made possible by recent network upgrades including the deployment of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) across all 3G markets by the end of June.

AT&T's 3G network is currently available in over 275 major cities in the U.S. Downlink speeds have increased to between 700 Kbps and 1.7 Mbps from 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps. Upload speeds increased to between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps from 500 Kbps to 800 Kbps. Only customers using LaptopConnect wireless cards will be able to use these increased speeds.

AT&T has spent an average of over $5 billion a year on its network over the past 4 years. By the end of the year the company will be the first U.S. carrier to have fully deployed High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) across its entire 3G network, and 3G services will be available in over 350 metropolitan areas. From 2009 to 2010 HSPA will evolve to HSPA+ with speeds topping out at 20+ Mbps. AT&T plans to adopt Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology to reach even higher speeds in the future.
