Nokia today unveiled their new N85 which will replace the N81. The N79, an upgrade from the N78, was also introduced.

Nokia N85 smartphone

Like its predecessor, the N85 is a slider. Its camera has been upgraded to 5 megapixels (N81 had a 2 megapixel camera). The N85 is also equipped with GPS for directions, mapping and geotagging photos. The screen has been upgraded from a 2.4" LCD (color TFT) to a 2.6" AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode). A big advantage of OLED displays is that they require no backlighting element and thus use far less power. That being said, the N85 will be capable of as much as 28 hours of music playback on a single charge. Instead of having built in 8GB storage like the N81, the N85 will come bundled with an 8GB microSDHC card that can be upgraded to 16GB. The N85 is also N-Gage friendly, with controls situated for gameplay in landscape view. Internet connectivity is through either Wi-Fi or HSDPA based 3G.

The bar-style N79 upgrades the N78's camera from 3.2 megapixels to 5 and includes a dual-LED based flash. It will also feature swappable backs for the fashion-sensitive among us. It is 3G and Wi-Fi capable and has GPS. Its battery is capable of delivering up to 24 hours of music playback. It also includes a 4GB microSD (N78 had a 2GB card).

Both the N85 and N79 should be available in the UK as early as next month. Release dates for the rest of Europe will vary and unlocked devices can be expected for the U.S., as both the N81 and N78 were available unlocked in the U.S.
