T-Mobile, in partnership with Google, has announced the launch of the world's first Android powered phone, the G1(the phone is not called the Android, as I have already seen a few news stations refer to it as such, Android is the OS). The G1 will officially be available on Wednesday, October 22nd.

The G1 is made by the Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC and is similar in design to the Sidekick series. It is a dual-band UMTS HSPA and quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone that also has Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity. It has a 3.2-inch 320 x 480 (HVGA) resolution capacitive touchscreen and features a slide out QWERTY keyboard (actually the screen slides up to reveal the keyboard). The area below the screen is slightly angled, possibly for better grip while in landscape mode, which, like the iPhone, happens when the phone is tilted on its side. The G1 also features a 3.2 megapixel fixed-focus camera and a microSD slot with an included 1GB card (up to 8GB supported).

The G1 comes preloaded with apps such as Google Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Contacts, Calendar and IM. Of course many more apps will be available for download from the Android Market, which is similar to Apple's App Store but more open. The phone also features Google's Street View with a compass feature that pans the display as you turn with the phone in your hand.

The G1 will be available in white, soft black and soft brown. There is a $25 plan for unlimited web access and some amount of text messages and a $35 plan for unlimited data and messaging. Both plans, however, have a 1 GB cap on the data usage, so it's technically not unlimited.
