New HD Film Showcases Canon 5D Mark II's Spectacular Video Capability
Highly acclaimed and Pulitzer-winning New York photographer Vincent Laforet has used Canon's new 5D Mark II to produce a short film entitled Reverie. The film is nothing short of amazing, with video quality you would expect from professional film equipment. According to Laforet himself, “you no longer need half-million dollar’s worth of high definition video cameras and lenses delivered by a truck with its own driver to shoot a high definition film in low light - you just need a $2,700 camera and a few lenses.”

After writing a review of the 5D Mark II on his blog, Canon gave him the opportunity to use their not yet released camera to shoot Reverie. The stunning HD film was completed in under 72 hours and is now up and attracting many enthusiasts. You can see the film in its entirety here.
In his brief review of the camera, Laforet calls the 5D Mark II a "game changer." According to him, the "5D MKII camera produces the best stills in low light that [he's] ever seen - what you can see with you eye in the worst light (such as sodium-vapor street lights at 3 a.m. in Brooklyn) - this camera can capture it with ease." He also says that it produces the best video in low light that he's ever seen - at 1080p. And though the 5D Mark II will sell for $2700, Laforet contends that it performs better than many $100K+ video cameras.
The EOS 5D Mark II has several upgrades over its predecessor. Its full frame sensor has been upgraded to 21.1 megapixels and it has a 3 inch high resolution LCD, while the original 5D had a the 2.5". Canon also added LiveView shooting and the sensitivity range has been raised to ISO 50 - ISO 25,600. There are now 15 auto focus points as opposed to 9, and continuous speed is now 3.9 rather than 3 fps. The HD (1920×1080,16:9) video capture operates at 30 fps.
The excitement and anticipation surrounding the 5D MKII, which doesn't ship until the end of November, has prompted many to pre-order the camera to ensure they get theirs right away. Several retailers are offering pre-orders:

Pretty soon, HD technology will be common, just as DVD technology before it and VCD technology before that. DSLR advancements have grown by leaps and bounds to what it was a decade ago.
