Last night, Wal-Mart spokesperson Melissa O'Brien confirmed rumors that the mega-retailer would begin selling the new Android powered G1 phone at a discounted price beginning tomorrow, Wednesday October 29th. Wal-Mart will carry the G1, which is sold through Deutsche-Telekom's T-Mobile USA, in 550 stores at the reduced price of $148.88. This amounts to a $31.11 savings over the $179.99 price found at T-Mobile stores. The offer is available to both new customers and existing customers eligible for an upgrade, who enter a two year agreement.

The G1 is the first available phone to operate on Google's open source Android platform. Users can download hundreds of applications, as well as upload their own applications for distribution. The market is similar to Apple's App Store in that customers can easily find, purchase and download applications. The layout is similar to YouTube in that its interface allows customers to provide feedback via a rating system and upload their own apps. The user will have to register as a merchant in order to upload their apps.

The handset itself is a slider made by HTC and features a large 3.2" LCD touch screen, a trackball and a QWERTY keyboard. Modes include GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900, WCDMA 1700 / WCDMA 2100. The G1 also features A-GPS and an accelerometer. It has a 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus. The 1150 mAh lithium-ion battery affords up to 5.8 hours talk time and 402 hours standby. It has a microSD memory card slot that supports up to 8 GB (1 GB card included). The phone is 4.62" x 2.19" x 0.67" and weighs about 5.6 ounces.
