Yesterday at the CES LG announced its partnership with Harris Corp. to bring television broadcasts to mobile devices. Dubbed MPH for Mobile Pedestrian Handheld, the technology will require handset manufacturers to install a reception chip in their devices.

Harris, an established manufacturer of broadcasting equipment, will be working with broadcasting stations (apparently hundreds are involved in the partnership) to develop device signals. MPH technology could make short range TV broadcasting a possibility in public venues such as stadiums, parks, malls, etc.

On the receiving side, LG chief technology officer Woo Paik said that MPH will not only be available to mobile phones, but to laptops, MP3 players, navigation devices, and other portable devices as well. Field trials of the system are already under way and will continue through 2008, and if all goes well it could be available early in 2009.
