Previously, little light had been shed on Nikon's flagship DSLR to be, the long awaited D3x. Specs and details have now emerged, however, in the latest Nikon Pro magazine. The D3x will be the fourth pro DSLR released by Nikon this year (following the D3, D300 and D700) and the specs look very promising - you won't be disappointed.

Designed for medium format shooting, the D3x has a 35.9 x 24mm 24.5 megapixel sensor which makes it Nikon's highest resolution DSLR yet. The sensor also features OLPF - optical low pas filter. Like the D3, the D3x features the 51-point MultiCAM3500FX autofocus system which has the largest number of individually selectable focus points available, making it easy to focus on small details of a scene. It also has the same Autofocus Tracking capabilities as the D3. It has an ISO range of 100 to 1600, with Lo1 and boost settings that equate to ISO 50 and 6400 respectively.

The D3x is very fast, shooting up to 5 fps, and offers two crop modes, DX and 5:4. In DX mode the camera can capture 10 MB files at 7 fps. It has a 12 ms startup time and a 41 ms shutter release lag time. It writes files to dual CF slots at a rate of 35 MB/second.

The D3x's 16 bit Expeed processor is tuned to minimize unnatural digital noise and color fringing that can occur with older F-mount Nikkor lenses. The camera also features a new Extra High Active D-Lighting setting which helps to manage high contrast scenes.

Like the D3 the D3x also features Live View, which allows you to shoot via a 3 inch monitor rather than the viewfinder. The 922,000 dot wide angle (170 degrees) monitor offers ultra high definition.

The D3x interfaces via USB 2.0 or by a wireless WT-4 transmitter. It has HDMI and AV/Out ports. A ten pin terminal allows Nikon's new GP-1 GPS unit to attach and mount in the hotshoe.

The durable magnesium body of the D3x is ergonomically designed and has weather sealed buttons and dials. It is powered by an EL-EL4a lithium-ion battery, like the D3.

Unfortunately there is no word yet on the price or release date. Stay tuned though, as we'll update as soon as we find out.
