Verizon Debuts Femtocell Network Extender, AT&T Not Far Behind
Verizon Wireless is now offering a Network Extender that will enhance cellular coverage within the home or office, or any indoor area up to 5000 square feet for that matter. The Extender simply plugs into your existing broadband connection to connect to the Verizon Wireless network. Although the Network Extender will provide more reliable wireless service indoors it does not, unfortunately, support mobile broadband (EVDO) data speeds, anything from the V CAST group of products or any location based services like Navigator and Chaperone. In addition, the Extender will only work with Verizon Wireless phones.

The Network Extender can be purchased online or over the phone for $249.99. It requires a broadband connection of 300 Kbps or faster. There are no additional fees beyond the $250. Your normal Verizon Wireless fees apply when connected to the Extender.
Keeping with the competition, AT&T has revealed some information about its own femtocell product. The 3G MicroCell will also extend indoor coverage to about 5000 square feet. Unlike Verizon's Network Extender it will support broadband data speeds. It will support up to 10 AT&T 3G wireless devices, 4 simultaneously. It appears that the 3G MicroCell will require an additional service plan, unlike the Network Extender. No word on pricing of the device or service plans yet, nor of the launch date.
