Canon has just announced its newest upper entry level DSLR, the EOS 500D, a.k.a. the Rebel T1i. It features a 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with 1080p HD video recording at 20fps, making it Canon's first compact, lightweight DSLR with Full High Definition video capability.

The 500D's 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor is ideal for large prints and offers greater cropping possibilities. The camera also offers ISO sensitivity up to 3200, which is expandable up to 12800, allowing photographers to shoot in near dark conditions.

The DIGIC 4 image processor, in conjunction with the CMOS sensor, delivers "exceptional noise reduction and 14-bit image processing for smooth gradation of tones and natural-looking colours." The processor is fast as well, offering ultra-fast start-up times and quick image review. The DIGIC 4 is capable of continuous shooting up to 3.4 fps in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs. It also uses Canon's wide area auto focus (AF) system which incorporates nine sensors, including a a central cross type point with a high precision sensor for f/2.8 or faster lenses.

Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System protects the image quality by removing dust from the image sensor. Any particles that make it through the cleaning can be removed in post processing via Dust Delete Data, which can be done in-camera, or with Canon's Digital Photo Professional software, which is included.

The Digital Photo Professional software offers a comprehensive RAW editing package, featuring functions such as a stamp tool, a quick check tool, and a cropping tool. It also gives the editor the ability to change white balance, brightness and Picture Styles in RAW images. The software suite is included with EOS Utility and Picture Style editor.

The EOS 500D is Canon's first lightweight DSLR capable of HD recording. It can capture Full HD at 1080p or, for longer shoots, it can be lowered to resolutions of 720p or VGA.

Stills and videos can be viewed on the 3.0” Clear View LCD screen, which is the same screen featured on the highly acclaimed 5D Mark II. It features a 920,000 dot count – for ultra-detailed image review, accurate focus checks, and clear access to the EOS menu system.

The 500D is compatible with the full range of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i is expected to ship in May for an expected retail price of $800. The kit will come with the 18-55mm IS lens and go for $900. Check back for retailers offering pre-orders of the EOS 500D.
