Canon's Rebel line of lightweight compact DSLRs has a new flagship in the EOS 500D, also known as the Rebel T1i. The 500D takes the top upper-entry-level DSLR position over the ever popular Rebel XS and Rebel XSi models. According to Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe, “The EOS 500D pushes the boundaries of what photographers can demand from their cameras, combining exceptional images with full HD video... Photography enthusiasts can now capture their most significant moments in a manner that matches their creativity.” Though just announced on Wednesday, the 500D is already available for pre-order from some retailers.

The 500D boasts a 15.1 MP APS-C CMOS sensor which, at 22.3 x 14.9mm, is slightly larger than the XSi's sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm). More importantly, however, is the expanded ISO sensitivity - the new sensor runs from 100 to 3200 with expanded settings of 6400 and 12800, allowing photographers to work in even the dimmest conditions.
The 500D is equipped with the DIGIC 4 processor which is capable of continuous shooting speeds of up to 3.4 fps in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs or 9 RAW frames. Unlike the XSi, the T1i can capture RAW images in all modes, including Basic and Creative Zone.
The huge addition on everyone's mind, however, is the 500D's Full High Definition video recording capability. This is similar to Canon's highly acclaimed 5D Mark II video capabilities. The 500D's highest complete HD resolution is 720p at 30fps. It can also capture 1080p, but at 20 fps, and VGA (640 x 480) at 30 fps as well.
Your movies and images can be viewed on the 500D's 3.0” Clear View LCD screen, the same screen featured on the 5D Mark II. It has a is a 640x480 design with 920,000 dots, offering a noticeably sharper onscreen image.
The 500D is compatible with Canon's full range of EF and EF-S lenses, and uses SD/SDHC cards, including Eye-Fi wireless cards. It uses the same battery as the XSi and will be compatible with Canon's new Speedlite 270EX, a small flash that will come out at the same time as the new camera.
The EOS 500D will be $800 for the body only or $900 for the kit, which includes the 18-55mm IS lens. Though it is expected to ship in May, many retailers will be offering pre-orders so you can make sure you get yours:
