iPhone 3.0 Update to Include Video Recorder and Compass
Ever since the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware came out users have been digging through the configuration files looking for clues to future upgrades. A lot of evidence, including files for video uploading and editing, has been found that suggests video recording will be available in future versions. The latest discovery pretty much confirms the existence of a video recorder. This screenshot was found in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta:

This shows a new iPhone camera interface with a toggle for video recording (notice the video camera icon in the bottom right). You can switch between still shots and video recording. This interface is not accessible by default in the current 3.0 beta, but apparently with a few modifications to the configuration files to let the firmware know the video recorder was present, the new interface shows up. Video recording is already available for jailbroken iPhones and works quite well when the lighting is good. It's a little choppy in low light conditions where the shutter speed slows down.
There is also evidence of a few more functions that may soon be available, including auto-focus for the camera, which would be a very welcome addition. It also looks like there will be a magnetometer, which is a digital compass. Sounds useful, I'd be interested to see how that would be implemented. There is also evidence pointing toward voice control.
Apple is expected to release the final version of Apple iPhone 3.0 this summer, which would put it right in line with the rumored new iPhone's release (thought also to be this summer). Let's hope the new iPhone has an improved camera to go along with these improved features. Megapixels aren't everything but 2 megapixels on a phone like this! C'mon Apple!
