Verizon Wireless and Samsung today announced the availability of Samsung's Alias 2 text messaging phone. It replaces the original Alias and has a nifty new keypad powered by E- Ink that the original did not have.

Samsung Alias 2

E Ink is the technology behind the low power displays on Amazon's Kindle and Kindle DX wireless reading devices. Samsung uses E Ink in the Alias 2's keypad, which allows it to morph depending on the orientation of the phone. The Alias 2 has a dual-hinge form factor that allows it to open vertically as a flip phone or slide horizontally into landscape view. In the vertical mode the keypad will have numbers, when switched to landscape the keypad will morph into a full QWERTY. No more multiple tiny symbols on each button.

In addition to the new interface, the Alias 2 has RemoSync, which allows users to synch with their corporate email, calendar, contacts, etc. It has a 2 megapixel camera that features zoom, autofocus, night shot, panorama shot and video capture. It has a microSD card slot with support up to 16 GB and also features VZ Navigator for turn-by-turn directions, VCAST video and music service, Bluetooth connectivity and Visual Voice Mail. It is media center capable, meaning you can download ringtones, wallpapers, games, location based services, etc. It also has Mobile email, Mobile IM and a personal organizer with calendar, calculator with currency converter, notepad, alarm clock, world clock and stop watch.

The Alias 2 comes in charcoal grey and is available now for $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate.
