Where to Pre-Order the Canon 1D Mark IV

Canon today announced the launch of the EOS-1D Mark IV, its newest high-speed professional DSLR camera. The Mark IV is now available for pre-order from several online retailers:

According to Senior General Manager of Camera Development Center, Canon Inc., Mr. Shinbori, "Throughout the EOS-1D Mark IV’s development, [Canon] carefully studied feedback from [its] photographers and developed a camera to meet their specific requirements." This resulted in the 1D Mark IV featuring a new Canon 16.1MP APS-H CMOS sensor and a brand new 45-point Auto Focus (AF) system with 39 f/2.8 sensitive cross-type points... "With a brand new, high-quality CMOS sensor and Dual “DIGIC 4” processors, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV allows photographers to be the first to get the highest quality images to picture desks in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market." The dual DIGIC 4 processors allow the camera to shoot continuous high resolution images at 10 fps while delivering the widest ISO range ever featured by a Canon camera.

The new 45-point AF system, with 39 f/2.8 sensitive cross-type points located across the frame allows for consistent auto focus on still or moving objects, regardless of which point is being used. All 45 points are user selectable and the points near the edge of the frame are now just as sensitive as those in the center. The AF system is powered by a dedicated microprocessor that allows for higher precision while tracking moving objects and increases focus reliability in low contrast and very bright conditions. The new AF system also features a range of manual and automatic control options, including Canon's new Spot AF feature which offers a more precise focus are for pinpoint focusing. A 63 zone metering system enables the use of multiple metering modes, with the dedicated sensor linked to the 45 AF points, providing AF point-linked and multiple spot metering options. The AF system also features an orientation sensor which allows the AF settings to change to suit the subject when the camera changes orientation.

The new high resolution 16.1MP APS-H CMOS sensor has an effective field view of 1.3x the focal length of the lens. The sensor's eight channel data read out accompanied by the dual DIGIC 4 processors allow the Mark IV to shoot at 10 fps at full 16.1 megapixel resolution while maintaining colors with 14 bit A/D conversion. This gives the 1D Mark IV the fastest continuous shooting with AF currently available in a Canon DSLR.

The Mark IV also has updated Picture Styles and features integrated Auto Lighting Optimizer, another first for a professional EOS body. The ALO automatically corrects the contrast and brightness of images as they are recorded.

The camera also features advanced performance in low light conditions. Its standard ISO ranges from 100 - 12,800 and the extended ISO ranges from 50 - 102,400, which is the highest ever offered in a Canon SLR.

The Mark IV has a rugged magnesium alloy body and is protected by rubber seals around the seams and controls, making it dust and water resistant. The buttons are ergonomically designed to have more of a 'click' when pressed, which is useful for photographers wearing gloves. The camera also features a 920,000 dot, VGA resolution, Clear View II LCD. The space between the LCD panel and the protective cover has been filled with a photo-elastic material which reduces light reflection.

Canon's EOS-1D Mark IV is also capable of 1080p HD video capture at 24, 25 and 30 fps and 720p at 50 and 60 fps. The camera is fully compatible with PAL, NTSC and native 1080/24p cinematic frame rates, and also offers full manual exposure which allows the user to control depth of field. A programmable button allows for instant HD recording.
