Toshiba Thrive Tablet Available for Preorder
The Thrive boasts a 10.1 inch wideview display with 1280 x 800 HD resolution (720p) and a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor. It has a 2 megapixel forward facing camera and a 5 megapixel camera on the back. It is powered by Android 3.1 Honeycomb and supports Adobe Flash. Connectivity includes HDMI, USB 2.0 and mini USB ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an SD card reader. It is also capable of Wi-Fi tethering. The Thrive also features GPS, a gyroscope, accelerometer and e-compass.
The Thrive is available for $429.99 for the 8GB model, $479.99 for 16GB and $579.99 for the 32GB model. Toshiba has not yet announced when the tablet will ship.
The launch coincides with several competitors' tablet debuts including Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 which will hit shelves later this week and Hewlett Packard's TouchPad which is slated for July 1st. Several other tablets will launch in the upcoming months as well, making for a competitive marketplace in the latter half of 2011. According to research firm IDC, about 44.6 million tablets will hit the shelves in 2011, with another 70.8 million making it to the marketplace next year. Research firm Gartner says that Apple will still hold the lion's share of the 2011 market with about 69 percent while Android tablets will hold about 20 percent.
