Today Canon launches its newest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. The camera features a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS integrated Cleaning System, a 3" LCD with Live View mode and a new nine point AF system. The 450D has all of the features of the EOS-1 series, including the DIGICIII

image processor and a redesigned menu system. It is also customizable, with 13 functions that can be adjusted by the user to his/her shooting style.

On the outside the 450D closely resembles the 400D, but there are many significant improvements, aside from those already mentioned, including:

  • 3.5 frames per second
  • 9-point wide-area AF system with f/2.8 cross-type center point
  • Picture Style image processing parameters
  • Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software1
  • Compact and Lightweight body
  • Fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites

The camera weighs about 475 grams and has an improved grip and an ergonomic design for the hands.

The Live View feature, which has not been available on Canon's previous consumer D-SLRs, makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles. It also offers a grid line display and a histogram to help with shot composition and exposure. Two types of autofocus are available as well. The Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor while Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus. Live View also offers a zoom that is up to 10x magnification of the area on the LCD.

A new high capacity battery allows up to 500 shots on a single charge. The 450D also comes with a software suite that includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data and Picture Styles.

No new 5D? Or at least a 3D/7D?

Bleh.

Canon could still make more announcements. PMA doesn't start until the 31st.
