PacketVideo unveils mobile TV broadcast receiver
During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week PacketVideo introduced a pocket sized mobile broadcast receiver. The device promises to turn WiFi enabled phones and media players into mobile TVs. According to PV CEO James C. Brailean, Ph.D, “removing the barrier of upgrading to an entirely new handset will significantly accelerate the adoption of mobile broadcast services by mainstream consumers.”

The device works by decoding digital TV signals and converting them for use on phones or other media devices, then sending them via a wireless signal such as WiFi to the playback device. PacketVideo uses patented protocols to ensure optimum rendering of the TV signal on playback devices and provides secure access to premium channels, which allows current mobile subscribers to upgrade to advanced mobile TV services without upgrading their handset.
The mobile broadcast receiver will be available in versions for all the major broadcast standards, including TDtv, DVB-H, MediaFlo and WiMAX. The device's appearance can be customized for the retail market with the carrier's badge or branding. The receiver will also be compatible with most of the top smart phones including Nokia's N series, the Apple iPhone and HTC Smartphone devices.
The receiver is 6.4 x 1.8 x 4 cm and features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and an LED power button that has a color changing halo to reflect battery life. The device should be available later this year.
