How do I unlock my Samsung BlackJack II's GPS receiver to work outside Telenav?

The Samsung BlackJack II is equipped with a SiRF III GPS receiver. Unfortunately, the GPS hardware is locked and will only work with the bundled Telenav software. There is a GPS intermediary driver (GPSID) that Microsoft uses to communicate between the GPS hardware and the applications that use the hardware. The GPSID is by default configured to work only with the Telenav software and Windows Live Search.

Thankfully, the MoDaCo Smartphone GPS Activator is now available. This hack will open up your GPS hardware to work with other applications such as Google Earth, etc. It opens up COM4 for GPS access so you can associate whatever applications you want with your GPS hardware. It is available as an over the air (OTA) install by pointing your mobile browser to http://modaco.com/gpsactivatorbj2. A computer executable is available here. There is also a CAB file to run from your handset available here.
