Unlocking the HTC G1 turns out to be quite easy. You will have to purchase an unlock code from Unlock-TMobileG1.com first. You have to place an order with your IMEI code, then you will receive an 8 digit unlock code. See how to find your IMEI code here.

After receiving your code you have to insert a non T-Mobile SIM card into the G1. The phone will prompt you for the unlock code which you enter and then hit unlock. Your device should be unlocked at this point and the screen will read "Network Unlock Successful." The following video shows you the process:

You can find your G1's IMEI number either by entering *#06# in the dialer or by going to Settings > About Phone > Status. Scroll down and you should see it. It is a 15 digit number.

Last night, Wal-Mart spokesperson Melissa O'Brien confirmed rumors that the mega-retailer would begin selling the new Android powered G1 phone at a discounted price beginning tomorrow, Wednesday October 29th. Wal-Mart will carry the G1, which is sold through Deutsche-Telekom's T-Mobile USA, in 550 stores at the reduced price of $148.88. This amounts to a $31.11 savings over the $179.99 price found at T-Mobile stores. The offer is available to both new customers and existing customers eligible for an upgrade, who enter a two year agreement.
