How do I personalize alerts for individual contacts on my BlackBerry?

(for BlackBerries operating on OS 4.2 and above)

1. Go to profiles and create a custom profile named after the intended contact.
2. Edit the notification ringtones for SMS, MMS, messages, level 1 messages and phone for this profile.
3. Save changes. This will send you back to the profiles page.
4. Wheel click and select New Exception.
5. Create a title for the new exception (the name of the contact makes the most sense)
6. In the From line select the name of the contact from the address book. This should add them to the From line.

How do I the OS from my BlackBerry?

For 87xx, 81xx and 88xx series go to Options->Security Options->General Settings, hit the menu key and select Wipe Handheld.
It's the same process for the 71xx, 72xx, 75xx and 77xx except you go to Content Protection under Security Options.

How do I clear my message counter or set it to zero?

If you have a voicemail icon that won't go away try:

  • Calling your voice mail and deleting messages.
  • Calling your BlackBerry and leaving a message, then calling your voice mail from your BlackBerry and deleting messages.
  • Pulling the battery and then putting it back in (hard reset).

If you have a new message icon that won't go away or a negative count try:

  • Pulling the battery while powered on for a hard reset.

How do I unlock my Blackberry?

You will need to know your IMEI number (found in Options->Status). Most carriers should give you your unlock code, but you may have to purchase a code from a vendor such as GSM Unlock Online. Each BlackBerry has its own unlock code, so you can't just get your friends unlock code, etc.

Once you have your unlock code follow these steps: (Note: You need to have a SIM card in your phone, whether active or not doesn't matter)

Where do I find my PIN and IMEI numbers on my Blackberry?

Go to Options and select Status.

How do I transfer SIM contacts to my Blackberry?

Open your Address Book then open the SIM Phone Book. A list of your SIM contacts will appear. You can either highlight one contact and click Add to Address Book or you can select Copy All to Address Book. Unfortunately, each SIM contact with multiple numbers will appear as a separate entry for each number and will have to be edited. This can be done more easily by syncing with a program such as MS Outlook, editing it there on your PC, then re-syncing.

How do I reset my RIM Blackberry?

There are several types of resets that can be performed on your Blackberry:

1. A soft reset is performed by pressing ALT+RIGHT SHIFT(CAP)+DELETE keys. This will stop all applications and re-establish communication between your Blackberry and computer. This does not work for the Blackberry Pearl.
