Verizon Debuts Femtocell Network Extender, AT&T Not Far Behind
Verizon Wireless is now offering a Network Extender that will enhance cellular coverage within the home or office, or any indoor area up to 5000 square feet for that matter. The Extender simply plugs into your existing broadband connection to connect to the Verizon Wireless network. Although the Network Extender will provide more reliable wireless service indoors it does not, unfortunately, support mobile broadband (EVDO) data speeds, anything from the V CAST group of products or any location based services like Navigator and Chaperone. In addition, the Extender will only work with Verizon Wireless phones.

The Network Extender can be purchased online or over the phone for $249.99. It requires a broadband connection of 300 Kbps or faster. There are no additional fees beyond the $250. Your normal Verizon

AT&T's new phone, the Quickfire, is now available (online or in AT&T stores) just in time for the holidays. Made by Personal Communications Devices (PCD), the phone is designed specifically with messaging in mind, though it has plenty of other features one would want in a phone and is very simple to use. According to Mark Collins, vice president of Voice and Data Services for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, "The AT&T Quickfire is perfect for texting fans who let their thumbs do the talking and want the benefit of a full keypad but don't need corporate e-mail access or other business features."
The Quickfire features a large 2.8", 240 x 320 interactive touch screen. The screen slides over to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard for fast messaging. It is a 3G phone (850/1900/2100 MHz) as well as GSM/GPRS (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It also has Bluetooth connectivity (1.2). The Quickfire has a 1.3

AT&T Announces Quickfire, Samsung Propel, Pantech Matrix and Slate
According to a recent Nielsen, many U.S. consumers now use their phones for texting more than for talking. AT&T also reported in its second quarter earnings that text volume had tripled compared with the second quarter 2007. In light of this growing popularity of text messaging among consumers, AT&T today announced four new phones designed specifically to make texting simpler and faster. All will be available for the upcoming holiday season. According to Carlton Hill, vice president of Devices and Product Development for AT&T's wireless operations, "This new line of mobile phones will be a hit with both the text messaging generation and users who want to more easily use other functions on their phone, from mobile e-mail to typing in a search term on the pre-installed YELLOWPAGES.COM... For a lot of reasons, more buttons are better."

The first phone, the Pantech Matrix, is available today and features a full QWERTY keyboard (as do the other three). Like the Pantech Duo it features a dual sliding double keyboard. It features a 1.3 megapixel camera, instant messaging, Mobile Email, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Mobile Music, CV, and
AT&T's Flimflammery Angers 3G iPhone Owners
I just read a funny yet sad and disturbing article at iPhoneFAQ that shows just how crappy customer service has gotten these days. The author, like many 3G iPhone users, has been plagued by the plethora of problems stemming from the poor performance of AT&T's 3G network (not the iPhone's antenna as many suspected). The author relates his nightmarish story of dealing with customer representatives from AT&T...

Basically AT&T has been apologizing over and over about the state of its 3G network, promising that it will be fixed within a month or so and telling customers to be patient. Although extremely annoying, especially after being excited about a new, faster iPhone and paying $200-$300 for it, network

AT&T Threatens Customers Over P2P Usage
In a public letter to the FCC today, AT&T senior vice president in charge of federal regulation issues, Robert Quinn Jr., warned that AT&T customers caught using peer-to-peer (P2P) software such as applications using BitTorrent protocol, on their mobile phones could have their contracts terminated.

Specifically the note said that "AT&T does not use network management tools to block the use of P2P applications by its mobile wireless broadband customers. However, AT&T’s terms of service for mobile wireless broadband customers prohibit all uses that may cause extreme network capacity issues,
